Horse Logging

A cost-effective low impact solution

Horses can be a cost-effective low impact solution for extracting a wide range of timber produce. Small size and high manoeuvrability enables them to work in the tightest spaces with minimum damage to flora and fauna.

Since 2005 I have been Horse Logging with my working cob type ponies, finding them a low impact and environmentally friendly alternative to mechanical methods.

I have won the BHL (British Horse Loggers) annual competition for single-horse logging in 2008 and again in 2009, also second place for two-horse logging in the same years.

Certificates and insurance

I hold CS30.1, CS30.2, CS31, CS32a, CS32b and CS34 chainsaw certificates. I also have both public liability insurance and employers’ liability insurance covering shows and demonstration, training courses, general felling and extracting and horse work.

Let my cobs do your jobs!

Crunchie works his horses as a sole means of timber extraction As a custodian of his ancient woodland he passionately believes it is his duty to respond to the future by learning from the past. Carrying on the old woodland skills for generations to come. The horses work the woodland as part of a low impact woodland management system, thus creating a mosaic of habitats which increases the wonderfully rich bio diversity.
